What The Tick!!

Did you know?

•They are related to the spider family.

•Survive on drinking blood of their host.

•They can feed on your pet for up to 10 days before dropping off to lay eggs.

•A female tick can lay several thousand eggs at a time.

•Interesting part is they contain an anaesthetic within their saliva ∴ your pet won’t feel the bite.

The Risks:

•Disease transmission such as Lyme Disease which can cause fever, lameness, kidney & neurological problems.

•The tick bite alone can become infected causing abscesses.

How to protect yourself?

  • Long trousers & long sleeve tops if working/ walking through forestry or grasslands.
  • Wearing light coloured clothing makes it easier to see ticks, also, a not so stylish option but does the trick, tucking trousers into your socks/boots prevents the creatures from crawling up your clothes.
  • Use insect repellent that targets ticks.

Your pets?

  • Always do a full body examination for your pets.
  • They can be anywhere on their body.
  • Talk to your vet about which “Spot-On” treatment will be suitable.
