The weather has turned cold and is expected to drop to freezing temperatures.
Its important to ensure our wildlife have enough resources to help with survival. This means we can give a helping hand to nature.
Why not try your hand at making your own fat balls for the birds visiting your garden, it may help with beating the January blues.
Here’s how you can do it!
What you will need:
- Bird seed.
- Porridge oats, peanuts, can be added to the seeds.
- Pine cone(s).
Bring lard to room temperature.
Ensure the pine cones are nice and clean. Tie a long piece of string to the bottom of each cone.
Carefully mix the lard & bird seeds, add the oats and nuts as well.
Apply mixture to the cones, don’t be afraid to cover all off the cone, creating a big ball.
Pop the cones onto a tray and place them into the fridge until the lard has set.
Find a sheltered and quiet area within the garden to hang the cones.
